Frank Duveneck The Gloucester Years Catalogue

This is a catalogue documenting the  Frank Duveneck The Gloucester Years displayed at the Cape Ann Museum from July 31 - November 7, 1987. 

Duveneck's artistic career, which included teaching, painting, etching and sculpting, spanned five decades from 1870 to his death in 1919. Until now, he has been best known for his early work done in Munich in the 1870s and 1880s and for his role in development of the "Munich style" of painting which is characterized by "vigorous brush work and dexterous manipulation of pigments, with flashing lights painted as directly as possible into warm, dark backgrounds." The exhibition which accompanies this catalog focuses on a series of oil paintings Frank Duveneck did in Gloucester, Massachusetts, between 1890 and 1917. Together, Duveneck's Gloucester paintings "set the capstone on his lifetime involvement with painterly realism."
