This catalogue documents the 2024 Exhibition of the works of Umberto Romano at the CAM Green. This exhibition was made possible through the support of The Umberto Romano and Clorinda Romano Foundation.

While Cape Ann’s art colony of the early to mid-20th century was best known for traditional seascape and landscape painters, there was a group of more progressive men and women working in the area at the time and foremost among them for over 30 years was Umberto Romano. A painter, printmaker, muralist and sculptor, Romano first came to Cape Ann in 1932. In 1933, he established the Romano School of Art which was in operation through the mid-1960s and provided art instruction to scores of students each summer. Romano was a multi-talented artist and while his style shifted continuously throughout his career, his passion for exploring the human condition is a thread that runs throughout his work.
