By Alice Gardner
Learn the ABCs of Manchester-By-The-Sea's historic Fourth of July celebration! Each letter tells the story of old-fashioned festivities and traditions as seen through the eyes the small coastal village.
A few days before the 4th of July, the town hosts the Red, White, and Blue Pancake Breakfast, complete with pony rides and band music. The night before the big day, a concert and fireworks on Singing Beach is held every even year, and a concert at Masconomo Park is held every odd year. On the the day itself, the parade begins with antique cars and bright red fire engines. Festive crowds then watch the Second and Tenth Massachusetts Regiments march by. A giant pink elephant, a spouting whale named Doodles, marching bands, steel drums, and jazz bands make the revelers go wild every year. And to everyone's delight, you can see Penny Farthing bike riders high up on their seats waving to the crowds. Following the parade, skydivers jump from planes and gently float into the school yard and land on the X—just where they are supposed to be.
