Growing up as a young black man in the 1920s in Wilmington, Delaware, Edward L. Loper always knew he wanted to be an artist. However, at this time, racism created many obstacles to achieving this dream for African Americans, and even Loper himself thought that he was likely doomed to fail. Nevertheless, Loper with his passion, drive, and focus became an accomplished painter and advocate for making art. This book is by one of Loper's students who through her own recollections provides a behind-the-scenes account of Loper and her own growth as an artist learning under him.
