His grandmother and his great-great aunt Sarah (Somes) Mackay were important figures in Brooks' early life and passed down stories to young Alfred which went back all the way back to the era of George Washington. In his memoir, Brooks recollects memories from his childhood in Gloucester and the stories his relatives would tell him which he calls "memories of memories."
