Published by Cape Ann Museum; Foreword by Martha Oaks; Essays by Chester Brigham and James F. O'Gorman

One of this country’s most important artists of the early 20th century and a highly respected teacher, John Sloan (1871-1951) spent five summers—1914 through 1918—living and working on Cape Ann. During that time he created nearly 300 finished oil paintings, using Gloucester’s rugged landscape as a backdrop to experiment with color and explore ideas about form, texture and light. Arguably the most productive period of his career, the body of work that Sloan created during this time continues to astonish and delight viewers a century after it was completed.

This catalogue accompanied the Cape Ann Museum's special exhibition John Sloan: Gloucester Days, previously displayed from July 11-November 29, 2015. The catalogue features 13 historical photos of John Sloan and his friends and family in Gloucester as well as relevant views of Gloucester and 39 full color reproductions of his works. Written pieces include a foreword by Martha Oaks, Chief Curator of Cape Ann Museum, and essays by James F. O’Gorman (McNeil Professor Emeritus of Wellesley College) and Chester Brigham (author of On Opposite Tacks: When Artist John Sloan & Capt. Solomon Jacobs Crossed Wakes in Wartime Gloucester).

Softcover, 53 pages. Full Color; 39 Images.
