The two were friends for fourteen years before they could marry, separated by Judith's first husband, the disapproval of her family, threats to John's safety, and the Atlantic Ocean. They finally married in 1788 in Salem, Massachusetts, moved to Boston in 1794, raised a daughter, and led productive, important lives. Their work impacted thousands of people in their own time, and altered the course of history in the causes of women's rights and liberal religion.
